What is the Twitter GIF Downloader?

The Twitter GIF Downloader saves the animated GIF from a public X (Twitter) post. You paste the post link and get the GIF as an MP4 video file, because X converts every uploaded GIF to MP4 and doesn't keep the original .gif. The page also shows the post text, author, date and counts.

When someone posts a GIF, X re-encodes it as a short, silent MP4 and plays it on a loop in the app. X keeps only that one file per GIF, so there is no quality setting to choose: the tool hands you exactly what X stores. It is usually a fraction of the size of the original .gif and sharper, since MP4 isn't limited to 256 colors.

Need a real .gif? Run the MP4 through any video-to-GIF converter and expect a much bigger file. Most chat apps, slide tools and video editors accept the MP4 directly, which keeps both the quality and the small size.

Who uses it

  • Reaction GIF collectors

Keep a GIF you like so you can reuse it in chats without hunting for the post again.

  • Designers and presenters

Drop the MP4 into a slide deck or video editor, where it plays sharper than a .gif.

  • Community managers

Archive the GIFs a brand account posted, with the post text and date alongside.

What this tool can't do

  • You get MP4, not a .gif file. X doesn't keep the original GIF, so no tool can return it.
  • GIFs in protected accounts, direct messages and posts marked sensitive can't be reached.
  • A GIF inside a quoted post needs the quoted post's own link.
  • Looping depends on your player. The MP4 itself is a normal short video.
  • Up to 30 new lookups a day per visitor. For more, use the API.

If something goes wrong

Still images are photos on X. Press Download image, or use the Twitter Image Downloader.
The saved file plays once and stops
MP4 files don't loop by default. Turn on loop in your player, or convert the MP4 to .gif.

The post may be deleted or from a protected account. Copy the link again with Share > Copy link.

Why does my Twitter GIF download as an MP4?

X converts every GIF to a short MP4 video when it is posted and doesn't keep the .gif. The MP4 is that stored file: it looks the same and is much smaller.

How do I turn the MP4 into a .gif?

Use any video-to-GIF converter. The .gif will be larger and limited to 256 colors, so keep the MP4 wherever video is accepted.

Do GIFs on X have sound?

No, X plays GIFs silently. A clip with sound is a video post, and the Twitter Video Downloader saves those. Twitter Video Downloader.

Can I paste an x.com link?

Yes. x.com, twitter.com and mobile.twitter.com links to the post all work, and so does a link that points at the GIF itself.
