What is the Instagram Engagement Rate Calculator?

The Instagram Engagement Rate Calculator measures how much a public account's audience interacts with its reels. You enter a username; it takes the 12 latest reels, averages likes plus comments, divides by the follower count and shows the result as a percentage, with average likes, comments, views and a bar for each reel.

All numbers come from the public profile at the moment you press Calculate: the follower count and, for each of the 12 latest reels, its likes, comments, views and date. Nothing is estimated, and the account owner doesn't need to connect anything.

The tool uses reels because Instagram shows logged-out visitors the like and comment counts of reels, while the counts of many photo posts, especially on business and creator accounts, stay hidden. Reels are also where most accounts post today.

Engagement rate by followers is the standard public formula because it needs only public numbers. Brands sometimes ask for a rate by reach, but reach is shown only to the account owner in Instagram's Insights, so no outside tool can calculate it.

Who uses it

  • Brands shortlisting creators

Compare engagement across creators of a similar size before asking for media kits.

  • Agencies benchmarking clients

Get a quick public benchmark for a client and its competitors without logging in to each account.

  • Creators tracking themselves

Check your own rate after a change in posting style and see which reels pulled it up.

  • Spotting numbers worth a closer look

A very large following with a very low rate is a reason to look more carefully at an account.

How we calculate it

Engagement rate = average of (likes + comments) per reel, over the 12 latest reels ÷ followers × 100

For example, an account with 50,000 followers whose 12 latest reels average 1,200 likes and 50 comments has (1,200 + 50) ÷ 50,000 × 100 = 2.5%, which falls in the 1-3% average band. These are round illustrative numbers, not a real account.

  • Reels where the owner hid like counts are left out, so the average can use fewer than 12 reels. The result says how many were skipped.
  • Photo posts are not part of the average. Saves, shares and reach are visible only to the account owner, and views are shown but not part of this formula.
  • One viral reel can lift the average a lot. Check the per-reel bars before you rely on the rate.
  • Large accounts usually score lower than small ones, so compare accounts of a similar size.
  • Pinned reels count like any other reel, so an older pinned reel can be among the 12.

How to check an Instagram account's engagement rate

  1. Step 1

    Enter the username

Type the account name, with or without @, or paste its profile link.

  2. Step 2

    Press Calculate

The tool reads the follower count and the 12 latest reels and skips reels with hidden likes.

  3. Step 3

    Read the rate and rating

The big number is the engagement rate. The label under it places it from Low to Very high.

  4. Step 4

    Check the bars

Each reel has a bar for likes plus comments and its own rate, with the best reel highlighted.

What this tool can't do

  • Private accounts don't show reels to logged-out visitors, so there is nothing to calculate.
  • Only the 12 latest reels are used; photo and carousel posts are not part of the rate.
  • It doesn't check follower quality or detect fake followers.
  • Accounts that post no reels, or hide likes on every recent reel, get no rate.
  • Up to 30 new lookups a day per visitor. For more, use the API.

If something goes wrong

No reels with public counts
The account posts no reels, or the owner hid likes on recent reels. Try an account that posts reels.
This account is private
Reels of private accounts aren't public, so no rate can be calculated.
The rate looks too high
Look for one viral reel in the bars. Small accounts also often score several percent.

Instagram Engagement Rate Calculator FAQ

How is the engagement rate calculated?

For each of the 12 latest reels, likes and comments are added together. The average of those totals is divided by the follower count and multiplied by 100.

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?

As a rough guide, under 1% is low, 1-3% is average, 3-6% is good and over 6% is very high. Large accounts usually sit lower than small ones, so compare accounts of a similar size.

Why do other calculators give a different number?

Calculators use different post windows, likes-only or likes-plus-comments formulas, and followers or reach as the base. The formula used here is printed under the result.

Why does it use reels and not every post?

Instagram shows logged-out visitors the like and comment counts of reels, but hides the counts of many photo posts. Using reels keeps every number real instead of guessed.

Why were some reels left out?

Reels where the owner hid like counts are skipped instead of being counted as zero, and the result says how many.

Can it detect fake followers?

No. A low rate on a big account can be a reason to look closer, but this tool doesn't inspect followers.

Can I check many accounts at once?

Not in the free tool. The API returns the same follower and reel data for each account, so you can calculate rates in bulk from a spreadsheet or script. Use the API from Google Sheets.

Use it responsibly
