What is the Instagram Post Date Finder?

The Instagram Post Date Finder shows exactly when a public post or reel was published. You paste the link; it returns the date and time in UTC and in your browser's time zone, the day of the week, how long ago that was and the Unix timestamp Instagram stores for the post.

Instagram stores a publish timestamp with every post, counted in seconds since 1 January 1970 UTC. The app turns it into labels such as 3 days ago, and older posts show a date without the time. The tool reads the raw timestamp from the public post and converts it for you.

The time is when the post first went live. Editing the caption later doesn't change it. Instagram doesn't record which time zone the poster was in, so the result shows UTC and your own time zone, not the poster's local time.

Who uses it

  • Fact-checkers and journalists

Confirm when a photo or video first appeared before citing it or debunking a claim.

  • Researchers building timelines

Put posts from several accounts in exact order, in one time zone.

  • Contest and giveaway hosts

Check whether an entry went up before the deadline.

  • Marketers studying timing

See on what day and at what hour a competitor's best posts went live.

What this tool can't do

  • It dates posts and reels, not accounts. Instagram doesn't show account creation dates to logged-out visitors.
  • Caption edits and other later changes are not recorded; the date is the first publish time.
  • Stories and private posts can't be dated.
  • The poster's own time zone is unknown; you get UTC and your local time.
  • Up to 30 new lookups a day per visitor. For more, use the API.

If something goes wrong

Post not found
The post may be deleted or archived, or the link is cut off. Copy it again.
Private account
Private posts aren't public, so their date can't be read.
The date is a day off
Compare the UTC line with your local line. Near midnight, UTC can fall on a different day.
Story link
Links with /stories/ are not posts and can't be dated.

Instagram Post Date Finder FAQ

How can I see the exact time an Instagram post was posted?

Paste the post link here. The tool reads the publish timestamp Instagram stores and shows the date and time in UTC and your time zone.

Which time zone is the result in?

Your browser's time zone, with UTC shown as well. Instagram doesn't record which time zone the poster was in.

Does editing a caption change the date?

No. The date is when the post first went live, not when it was last edited.

Does it work for reels and carousels?

Yes. Reels, single photos and carousels all have a publish timestamp, so /reel/ and /p/ links both work.

Can I find out when an Instagram account was created?

Not with this tool. Instagram doesn't show account creation dates to logged-out visitors, so the tool dates individual posts.

What is a Unix timestamp?

The number of seconds since 1 January 1970 UTC. Spreadsheets and code can turn it into any date format without time zone mix-ups.

For developers

Need this for many links?

The same data as JSON from one request. Use it on hundreds of links from your own code, a spreadsheet or n8n.

curl -X POST https://api.scrapeeverything.com/v1/instagram/post \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"url":"https://www.instagram.com/p/BsOGulcndj-/"}'

Not a developer? Fill a Google Sheet or use the n8n workflow with the same API key.
