What is the YouTube Tag Extractor?

The YouTube Tag Extractor shows the tags a creator added to a YouTube video or Short. You paste the video link and get each tag as a chip you can copy, the whole list comma-separated or as hashtags, and the total length against YouTube's 500-character limit.

Tags are keywords a creator types into YouTube Studio when uploading. YouTube does not show them on the watch page, but it includes them in the public page data that loads with every video, and that is what this tool reads as a logged-out visitor. It returns up to 100 tags; the 500-character limit keeps almost every video well below that.

Next to the tags you get the video's category, its publish date and its title length in characters (YouTube allows 100). The character count joins the tags with commas, the way YouTube counts them. YouTube also counts the quotation marks it adds around a tag that contains a space, so the real total can be a few characters higher.

Treat other people's tags as research. YouTube says tags play a minimal role in discovery and help most with words people often misspell, while the title, thumbnail and description matter more. Adding tags that do not describe your video breaks YouTube's spam rules.

Who uses it

  • Competitor research

See which keywords successful videos in your niche target before you write a title and description.

  • Checking your own uploads

Confirm the tags on an older video, or spot one that is close to the 500-character limit.

  • Finding misspellings

Creators use tags for common misspellings and alternate names, the one job YouTube says tags still do well.

  • SEO and agency audits

Collect the tags of a client's or competitor's videos for a report without access to their YouTube Studio.

How to see the tags on a YouTube video

  1. Step 1

    Copy the video link

In the YouTube app, tap Share under the video and choose Copy link, or copy the address bar on a computer. Shorts links work too.

  2. Step 2

Paste it and press Get tags

The tags appear as chips, with the tag count and the character total above them.

  3. Step 3

    Copy what you need

Click a tag to copy just that one, press Copy all for a comma-separated list, or Copy as hashtags to get each tag as a #word without spaces.

  4. Step 4

    Check the details

Below the tags, compare the category, publish date and title length with your own video before you reuse anything.

What this tool can't do

  • It shows the tags a video has. It does not score them or suggest new ones.
  • Many videos have no tags at all, and the tool then shows an empty list.
  • Hashtags written in the title or description are not listed; open the video to see them.
  • Private, deleted and members-only videos do not work.
  • Up to 30 new lookups a day per visitor. For more, use the API.

If something goes wrong

This video has no tags
The creator did not add any. That is common, even on very popular videos.
Wrong link type
Paste a link to a single video or Short. Channels and playlists do not have tags of their own.
Video not found
The video may be private, deleted or blocked in some countries. Check that it plays on YouTube while logged out.
YouTube did not answer
Wait a minute and try again. YouTube sometimes turns away automated visits for a short time.

YouTube Tag Extractor FAQ

Can viewers see YouTube tags?

Not on the watch page. Tags are stored in the page data YouTube sends with every video, which is what this tool reads.

Why does a video show no tags?

Many creators do not add any. The tool shows exactly what the video has, so an empty list means the video has no tags.

Do YouTube tags still matter?

YouTube says tags play a minimal role in discovery and help mainly with commonly misspelled words. Titles, thumbnails and descriptions matter more.

How many tags can a YouTube video have?

There is no fixed number. The total is limited to 500 characters, counting the commas between tags and the quotation marks around tags that contain a space.

What is the difference between tags and hashtags?

Hashtags start with # and are written in the title or description, where viewers can click them. Tags are hidden keywords entered in YouTube Studio.

Can I copy tags from another YouTube video?

You can, but use only tags that describe your own video. YouTube treats misleading or excessive tags as spam.

Does it work for YouTube Shorts?

Yes. Paste the /shorts/ link and you get the Short's tags the same way.

Use it responsibly

The tool shows only what YouTube shows to anyone who isn't logged in. Use what you see for research, planning and your own records, and respect people's privacy. Is this your account? Request removal.
