What the Instagram Comments Scraper API does
The Instagram Comments Scraper API returns the newest public top-level comments on a post or reel: text, time, like count, reply count, GIF URL and the commenter's username. Send the post or reel URL, or just its shortcode. Logged-out Instagram exposes only the 15 most recent top-level comments of a post, so the endpoint returns at most 15 and tells you with has_more whether more exist; the total comment_count is always included. That makes it a good fit for monitoring fresh reactions to a post, spotting questions or complaints early and checking whether engagement on sponsored content looks real. Each request costs 1 credit and failures are refunded.
What you get
Top-level fields of the response. Every field is typed and documented; nullable fields are null when the platform does not show them.
| Field | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
shortcode | string | Canonical 11-char shortcode (from og:url) |
link | string | Post URL (https://www.instagram.com/p/<code>/) |
comment_count | integer | null | Total number of comments on the post |
comments | array<object> (7 fields each) | Most recent top-level comments, newest first, max limit (at most 15) |
comments_fetched | integer | Number of comments returned |
has_more | boolean | The post has more comments than were returned |

Use cases
- Monitor the first reactions to a launch post or sponsored reel.
- Spot product questions and complaints in comment sections and route them to support.
- Check engagement quality: repetitive generic comments can indicate bought engagement.
Limitations: Unofficial API: not affiliated with or endorsed by the platform. Public data only, as a logged-out visitor sees it. Private accounts return profile fields only; posts show at most 15 newest comments; items Instagram hides from logged-out visitors are missing.
- Logged-out access shows only the 15 most recent top-level comments of a post, so at most 15 comments are returned even when limit is higher. Older comments and replies are not available; has_more tells you whether more exist.
- Comment authors' display names (full_name) are not part of logged-out data and are not returned.
- Returns 404 with PRIVATE_ACCOUNT or AGE_RESTRICTED when the post exists but is not publicly viewable.
Questions
Why do I only get 15 comments?
Instagram shows logged-out visitors only the 15 most recent top-level comments of a post. Older comments and replies are not publicly available, so they cannot be returned.
Are commenters' names included?
Usernames are included. Display names (full_name) are not part of logged-out data.
Does it work for reels?
Yes. Send a post, reel or IGTV URL, or a bare shortcode.
How much does the Instagram Comments Scraper API cost?
1 credit per successful request. Credits are bought in one-time packs and never expire. New accounts get 100 free credits. No payment details needed.
Am I charged for failed requests?
No. If the platform blocks the request, it times out or something fails on our side, the credits are refunded automatically. A definitive answer such as "this account does not exist" is billed because the lookup completed.
Can I re-read a result without paying again?
Yes. Send cache_days (1 to 14) and a repeat request for the same target within that window is served from your cache for free.
