Apify alternative for social media: actors vs one API

The main Apify alternative for social media is a synchronous API: one POST, JSON back, one schema on 9 platforms. Seven tools compared, October 2026.

TL;DR: The most common Apify alternative for social media is a synchronous scraping API: you send one POST request and get JSON back in the same HTTP response, with one schema and one error format on every platform. Apify stays the better pick when you need sites beyond social media, or hosted scheduling and storage.

Last updated: October 22, 2026. Competitor prices below come from each vendor's own pricing page, checked that day. Prices change, so open the linked pages before you commit to anything. If you want the side-by-side version of these facts, our Apify vs Scrape Everything comparison is the hub page for this topic.

What are the main Apify alternatives for social media scraping?

People usually move to one of two things: a hosted social media API, or a large web data company with scraper APIs and datasets. A few go fully do-it-yourself.

For a one-off script, open-source tools like Instaloader for Instagram, yt-dlp for video metadata and youtube-transcript-api for captions work fine. Apify's own open-source library, Crawlee, is a good base if you'd rather build and host scrapers yourself. You then own the proxies, the blocks and the upkeep.

What is the difference between an actor platform and a synchronous API?

An actor platform is a hosted runtime where each scraper is a program (an "Actor" on Apify) that you start as a job, wait on, and then read results from a dataset. A synchronous scraping API is a web service that does the fetch and the parse inside one HTTP request and returns the result in the response body.

On Apify, a typical social media flow looks like this:

  1. Pick an Actor from the Apify Store (many are built by third parties).
  2. Start a run with that Actor's own input format.
  3. Wait for the run to finish, by polling its status or with a webhook.
  4. Read the items from the run's default dataset.
  5. Map that Actor's output fields to your own model.

Apify does offer a shortcut. The run-sync-get-dataset-items endpoint in the Apify API docs starts a run and returns the dataset items in one call. Per the docs, a run that takes longer than 300 seconds gets a 408 Request Timeout, and you're back to polling. It's a wrapper around the same job model.

With a synchronous API there's one step: POST /v1/instagram/profile with {"username": "example_user"}, then read data. No run ID, no dataset to clean up.

Jobs fit an hour-long crawl of 50,000 pages. For "fetch this profile so my app can render it", a job queue is pure overhead.

We built Scrape Everything synchronous on purpose. Most social data lookups are small and interactive (one profile, one video, one transcript), and making the caller manage run state felt like the wrong default.

Why does Apify cost what it does?

Apify bills platform usage in compute units. In Apify's words, "a compute unit (CU) is the unit of measurement for the resources consumed by Actor runs and builds". On top of that, a third-party Actor can carry its own price; Apify's monetization docs list pay per event and pay per usage as the models developers can choose.

So what one Instagram profile costs on Apify depends on the Actor you pick and how much compute its run burns. Two teams scraping the same profiles with different Actors can get different bills, so forecasting needs a test run per Actor.

How do Apify, Bright Data and Scrape Everything pricing compare?

The three bill in different units: Apify per month plus whatever each Actor charges, Bright Data per record, us per request in credits. Entry prices are in the table above; here's the rest.

Sources: Apify pricing page and Bright Data Web Scraper API pricing, both checked October 22, 2026. These are list prices in different units (Apify usage, Bright Data records, our credits), so they aren't like-for-like. Our other packs are on the pricing page.

A worked example with our own prices. Say an agency tracks 500 Instagram accounts weekly and wants each profile plus its 12 latest posts. One instagram.photos request (2 credits) returns every profile field plus up to 60 recent posts (12 by default), so that's 500 x 4 weeks x 2 credits = 4,000 credits a month. A Builder pack ($39 for 25,000 credits) covers a bit over six months of that, roughly $6.25 a month. Reads that hit the cache inside your cache_days window cost nothing, so the real number can be lower.

Monthly plans suit steady volume; one-time packs suit bursty work, and an idle month costs nothing. Model your own volume with the pricing calculator, or see social media scraping API pricing compared.

Why does one schema across platforms matter?

The expensive part of a scraping integration is rarely the first request. It's the third platform adapter, and the morning one of them renames a field.

Here's what stays the same across all 9 platforms on Scrape Everything:

  • Request shape. Every endpoint is POST https://api.scrapeeverything.com/v1/<platform>/<action> with a small JSON body and an Authorization: Bearer ssk_live_... header.
  • Response envelope. Every success returns success, data and meta (request ID, whether it was cached, credits charged, credits remaining, duration).
  • Error format. Every failure returns success: false, a human message, a stable code such as NOT_FOUND, PRIVATE_ACCOUNT or TARGET_BLOCKED, and a request_id. The full list is in the error codes reference.
  • Billing rules. Most endpoints cost 1 credit; some feed and search endpoints cost 2 or 3. Requests that fail because of blocks, timeouts or errors on our side are refunded automatically. Cache hits are free.
  • Rate limits. Limits apply per account and every key shares them. The defaults are 60 requests per minute and 5 concurrent, and 300 per minute and 20 concurrent once your purchases total $39 or more (a Builder pack or larger does it at once); the current numbers live on the rate limits page.

Output is JSON. On a marketplace, each Actor's author picks the inputs, outputs and error style, so one Actor for Instagram and another for TikTok means two adapters to maintain.

Our OpenAPI spec describes every endpoint, handy for generated clients. AI agents can use the same endpoints through an MCP server (@scrapeeverything/mcp, listed in the official MCP Registry), a CLI (npx scrapeeverything) and an n8n community node.

What does the same Instagram profile fetch look like on both?

Same task, two ways. The Apify part is conceptual: <actor-id> and the body depend on the Actor you choose, so check its README.

Apify: start a run and read the dataset (conceptual)

bash
# Start a run of an Instagram profile Actor and wait up to 300 s for its dataset items.
# The input body is defined by whichever Actor you pick.
curl -X POST "https://api.apify.com/v2/actors/<actor-id>/run-sync-get-dataset-items" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $APIFY_TOKEN" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{ "usernames": ["example_user"] }'

# Past 300 s you get a 408 and switch to the async flow:
# start a run without waiting, poll the run status, read the run's dataset items.

You get back an array of items whose field names are set by the Actor author.

Scrape Everything: one request

This is a real endpoint. Set SCRAPEEVERYTHING_API_KEY and swap example_user for any public account:

bash
curl -X POST https://api.scrapeeverything.com/v1/instagram/profile \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $SCRAPEEVERYTHING_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"username": "example_user", "cache_days": 1}'

Response (trimmed, placeholder values):

json
{
  "success": true,
  "data": {
    "id": "1234567890",
    "username": "example_user",
    "full_name": "Example User",
    "biography": "Placeholder bio",
    "is_private": false,
    "is_verified": false,
    "is_business_account": true,
    "category_name": "Product/service",
    "follower_count": 12000,
    "following_count": 310,
    "post_count": 245,
    "highlight_count": 4
  },
  "meta": {
    "request_id": "req_...",
    "cached": false,
    "credits_charged": 1,
    "credits_remaining": 99,
    "duration_ms": 1840
  }
}

username accepts a plain username, an @handle or a profile URL. Parameters and limits are on the Instagram profile scraper page.

Same code, different platform (Python)

This is the part a marketplace makes hard. Moving from Instagram to TikTok or YouTube changes the path and the body, nothing else:

python
import os
import requests

API = "https://api.scrapeeverything.com/v1"
HEADERS = {"Authorization": f"Bearer {os.environ['SCRAPEEVERYTHING_API_KEY']}"}

def call(path: str, body: dict) -> dict:
    res = requests.post(f"{API}/{path}", headers=HEADERS, json=body, timeout=90)
    try:
        payload = res.json()
    except ValueError:
        # A proxy in between can answer with HTML (for example a 502); surface the status instead
        res.raise_for_status()
        raise
    if not payload["success"]:
        # Same error shape on every platform: branch on the stable code
        raise RuntimeError(f"{res.status_code} {payload['code']}: {payload['message']}")
    return payload["data"]

video = call("tiktok/video", {"url": "https://www.tiktok.com/@scout2015/video/6718335390845095173"})
print(video["play_count"], video["author"]["username"])

transcript = call("youtube/transcript", {"url": "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ", "lang": "en"})
print(transcript["language_name"], transcript["segment_count"])
print(transcript["text"][:200])

Shape of the youtube/transcript data (trimmed, placeholder values):

json
{
  "video_id": "dQw4w9WgXcQ",
  "language": "en",
  "language_name": "English",
  "is_auto_generated": false,
  "available_languages": [{ "code": "en", "name": "English", "is_auto_generated": false }],
  "segment_count": 61,
  "text": "...",
  "segments": [{ "start": 0.0, "duration": 2.5, "text": "..." }]
}

Two practical notes. Use a client timeout of at least 90 seconds, as the rate limits docs recommend, because blocked requests get retried through other proxies and can take up to a minute. And if a video has no captions in the language you asked for, you get a 404 with code NO_TRANSCRIPT, and the message lists the codes that do exist. Treat that as a final answer. Retrying won't change it.

Can I use Scrape Everything and Apify together?

Yes. If your pipelines already live on Apify, you don't have to move them to try us.

We've written three Apify actors that run on the Scrape Everything API with your own key: an Instagram profile scraper, a TikTok profile and videos scraper, and a YouTube transcript scraper. They aren't in the Apify Store yet. The source is on GitHub today, and the Apify actors integration page tracks the status.

Is scraping public social media data allowed?

We only return public data, meaning what a logged-out visitor can see. We never log in. For a private account you get the fields any visitor sees (the rest come back as null), and private content returns a PRIVATE_ACCOUNT error. Scrape Everything isn't affiliated with any of these platforms.

What you do with the data is on you. Personal data rules such as the GDPR still apply to public profiles, and each platform has terms of service. If an official API (the Instagram Graph API, the YouTube Data API) fits your use case and quotas, consider it. This isn't legal advice. For more, read is scraping public social media data legal?

FAQ

What is the best Apify alternative for social media scraping?

For public data from Instagram, TikTok, X, YouTube, Facebook, Telegram, Spotify, Pinterest and Twitch, a synchronous scraping API like Scrape Everything is the closest alternative: one POST request returns JSON with the same schema and error format on every platform. For LinkedIn, Reddit or Threads, try ScrapeCreators; for non-social sites, Apify or Bright Data.

Is there an Apify Instagram scraper alternative that returns JSON immediately?

Yes. Scrape Everything's POST /v1/instagram/profile returns the profile as JSON in the same HTTP response, for 1 credit, with no run or dataset involved.

Does Apify have a synchronous API?

Partly. Apify's run-sync-get-dataset-items endpoint starts an Actor run and returns its dataset items in one call, but according to Apify's docs it returns 408 Request Timeout if the run exceeds 300 seconds. Under the hood it's still a job.

What are Apify compute units?

Apify defines a compute unit (CU) as "the unit of measurement for the resources consumed by Actor runs and builds." Platform usage is billed in CUs, and a third-party Actor can add its own price on top, so the cost per result depends on the Actor you choose.

What is a good Apify TikTok scraper alternative?

Scrape Everything has TikTok endpoints for profiles, posts, single videos, comments, transcripts, music and hashtags. Most cost 1 credit per request (music costs 2), and they use the same request and error format as the other 8 platforms.

Is there a free Apify alternative?

Apify's own free plan includes $5 of usage per month. Scrape Everything gives 100 free credits on signup with no payment details needed, and Bright Data lists 5,000 free records per month (as of October 22, 2026; prices may change). Open-source tools like Instaloader, yt-dlp and Crawlee are free if you host them yourself.
